Haiti

In the highest of Haiti's mountains, two national parks, Macaya and Lavisite, were established to conserve the country's natural heritage and unique mountain ecosystems. But these areas are under extreme pressure from Haiti's growing population of poor peasants who struggle to survive by deforesting and planting every available piece of land. Here an effort to introduce more sustainable agricultural practices and foster a more reciprocal relationship between people and the land were beginning to evolve. These photographs, done with guidance from Paul Paryski, then of the United Nations Development Program on Environmental Policy, Planning and Governance, explore the relationship of people, agriculture, and the environment.
